Apollo No. 5, the latest incarnation of our luxury space lounge, has landed, making its debut at the Architectural Digest Design Show 2019 in Mumbai. Having launched at the Milan Furniture Fair last year, Apollo’s missions have included L.A., Shanghai, and London – where our first Apollo currently resides at Timothy Oulton’s Bluebird flagship.
Built to the same scale as NASA’s Apollo 11 space capsule, and clad in polished steel panels, Apollo is a luxury, intimate lounge adaptable for many uses, from a private VIP seating zone to a workspace meeting capsule, or an indoor/outdoor dining pod. Presented in collaboration with Tarun Vadehra Interiors, Timothy Oulton’s partner in India, Apollo No. 5 showcases a sumptuous interior that has been customized exclusively for the Architectural Digest Design Show.
A paisley silk tie and a nice pair of tan shoes; a perfect reflection of 1970, the era of the Apollos, when dreams of space travel became the everyday. Apollo No. 5’s bespoke design features wall panels upholstered in a rich, paisley patterned silk with a combination of deep blue and golden tones. The banquette is tufted in Old Saddle Nut leather from the Timothy Oulton collection, a vintage inspired leather which picks up the warm tones and detail of the silk. Originating in Persia, the paisley design became popular in the West in the 18th and 19th centuries, later deriving its English name from the fabric town Paisley in Scotland where the designs were also produced. An Odeon chandelier in K9 glass, from the Timothy Oulton lighting collection, glows above an illuminated alabaster table, and the floor is fitted with a vintage Persian rug. Apollo was built entirely in-house by Timothy Oulton Studio’s team of skilled craftsmen.
2019 marks fifty years since NASA’s Apollo, god of the sun, put Neil Armstrong’s famous footprint on Mother Moon’s dusty surface and we saw our blue planet against the vastness of space for the very first time. Timothy Oulton Studio’s Apollo represents the journeys that we go on through time and space in search of design inspiration. It epitomises the ambition and innovation of that era when we travelled to the moon, and asks, what else is possible?
