A rare brief from Sankok co-owner Jing Zhang, “Make us something spectacular, no limitations, demonstrate our expertise with timber, the only proviso is we need to be able to build everything in-house.”
Heightening the sense of discovery, visitors and clients venture beyond the piles of salvage timber in various stages of processing around the workshops to arrive at the industrial doors of a quite typical factory building.
Suspended metal rings bolted to the concrete floor above support the timber latticed structure of the poly-carbonate clad owner’s office. This lantern like element glows in the central space when occupied.
Collaboration with available skills is always key to getting the best results, the experience and willingness of the exceptionally skilled Sankok masters made even more possible.
A sunken feather sofa at the end of the lantern office overlooks the draw bridge though an octagonal window with a bespoke brass clad desk and cast glass lamp located in the central area.
The lantern office, circular glass meeting room and main office are interconnected by open walkways and bridges above the showroom below, a layout that reflects the company’s mantra of transparency and inclusion.
A long table made with accumulated samples seats fifty for entertaining under the lantern. Further behind this space, a reclaimed beam cut with Japanese 3-way joint connections forms the bar positioned in front of an undulating reclaimed brick wall.
It has been the gift of my professional career to have built our office with TOS, and I dream of the day when I can have another go. Warning to all potential clients out there: it’s addictive, and you will want to come back for more.
